Soil Acidification, Mineral Neoformation and Heavy Metal Contamination Driven by Weathering of Sulphide Wastes in a Ramsar Wetland

چکیده
Past waste disposal practices have left large volumes of sulphidic material stockpiled in a Ramsar wetland site on the Atlantic coast southwestern Spain, leading to severe land degradation. With aim addressing this legacy issue, soil core samples were collected along two transects extending from abandoned stockpiles adjacent marshland and subjected XRD, SEM-EDS, ICP-OES ICP-MS analyses. Sulphide oxidation has been shown be major driver acid generation metal leaching into environment. The marsh receiving discharges sulphide wastes contains elevated levels (in mg kg−1) Pb (up 9838), As 1538), Zn 1486), Cu 705), Sb 225) Tl 13), which are retained both relatively insoluble secondary minerals (mainly sulphates oxides) easily soluble hydrated salts that serve as transitory pool acidity available metals. By using number enrichment calculation methods relate concentrations their baseline regulatory thresholds, there is enough evidence conclude these pollutants may pose an unacceptable risk human ecological receptors.

Investigation of Heavy Metal Contamination in the Surface Sediments of Anzali wetland in North of Iran
Over the last few decades, Anzali wetland has been at risk of pollutants, especially from heavy metals. The present research analyzes some physical and chemical properties and heavy metals concentration in 27 points in nine stations of Anzali wetland. The samples of each station have been mixed, acidic digested, and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The mean con...

متن کاملHeavy metal contamination in soil and some medicinal plant species in Ahangaran lead-zinc mine, Iran
Ahangaran lead-zinc mining area located in the west part of Iran is a mountainous region. In this study, medical plants and soils from 3 different sites in this area were collected in spring 2012. Soil and medical plants were analyzed for heavy metals [lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu)] concentrations using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectrometer (Varian ...
متن کاملModeling Soil Solution, Mineral Formation and Weathering
Simulation models are valuable tools to increase understanding of complex soil chemical processes. Initially modeling was restricted by limited computational power; thus, complex natural systems were often simulated with site-specific, regression-based models. These models (classified as functional models by Hoosbeek & Bryant, 1992) do not deal with the actual processes but were designed to sim...
